Hiring a motorhome for the first time feels like a big leap. It isn't. If you can drive a large van, you can drive a motorhome — the rest is just small habits you pick up in the first 48 hours. Here's everything we tell our first-time hirers before they arrive.

Can you drive it on a normal licence?

Both our Swift Edge motorhomes come in at 3,500kg max, which means anyone with a standard UK Category B licence can drive them — no special license, no extra test. The specific driver requirements (minimum age, points limit) are set by our insurer; you'll see these on the booking form.

If you've driven a long-wheelbase van or a tall SUV with a trailer, you'll feel at home inside 20 minutes. It's wider than you think but shorter than a transit van.

The 5 mistakes first-timers make

  1. Overbooking the itinerary. Driving 6 hours a day means you see carpark, motorway, carpark. Pick 2–3 spots for a week, not 10.
  2. Not emptying the waste tanks often enough. Grey water tank is smaller than you think. Empty it every 2 days.
  3. Leaving the gas on while driving. Legal in the UK but not in ferries/tunnels. Turn it off at the bottle when moving.
  4. Underestimating the height. Our Edge is 2.9m tall. Most low bridges in D&G are 3.5m+ but always check if sat-nav is routing you under something old.
  5. Wild camping off-road. Motorhomes don't have a right to roam in Scotland. Park where permitted (lay-bys, campsites, pub stopovers). Off-road driving is not allowed in hired vehicles.

What does it cost?

Our pricing starts from £140 per day off-peak and rises to £200 per day in July and August. A typical first-time week (Saturday to Saturday in July) works out around £1,200–£1,400 all in, plus fuel (a Swift Edge does about 27–30mpg on a steady run). Bedding, towels, and extra mileage are optional extras on top.

First time? We'll walk you through everything.

Zero-pressure handover, patient with beginners, happy to answer any question before you book.
